Reflections on the Surf Coast Century: A Journey of Grit and Connection

"Explore. Connect. Breathe." — for Trail Trekkers, these words are a way of life. Tracy Baker

This was never clearer than during the Surf Coast Century ultra-marathon. This September, as Surf Coast Century athletes toed the start line, I was taken back to the day in 2016 when I embarked on a significant 100km challenge along Victoria's coastline, an experience shaped by resilience and friendship.

 Setting the Stage

The journey to 100km began in January 2016. Originally, I aimed to run 50km for my 50th birthday, supported by running companions like Susan and Friends. Initially planned as a relay with Kate, we soon decided to complete the full distance individually.

Training: Foundation for Success

Training for the Surf Coast Century required a strong, focused regimen. Tuesday night speed runs and Thursday threshold sessions with intraining were essential, alongside weekend endurance runs simulating the event's terrain. Walking breaks were strategically included to prevent injuries and ensure stamina on the trails. Regular massages kept muscles healthy, while consultations with a dietician enhanced nutrition plans critical for sustaining energy over long distances. Traditional meals were replaced with nutrient-rich options like black rice, emphasising the importance of fuelling the body wisely.

 Nutrition: Sustaining Energy

My fuelling strategy was simple yet effective. Breakfast featured oats with yoghurt and berries; lunch included tuna and avocado salads; dinners consisted of chicken, beef, or fish with vegetables. These meals provided the necessary energy and reflected preparation and commitment.

 A Moment of Truth

Standing at the Surf Coast Century’s starting line on September 3rd, 2016, I felt both excitement and nervousness. As the day began, I started a journey that tested my mental strength and physical endurance. I wasn’t alone — the support from fellow runners and loved ones was always with me, urging me to keep going.

Reflection: Beyond the Finish Line

Finishing the Surf Coast Century was not just an end but a beginning. It represented exploration, connectedness with other runners and the landscape, and gratitude for each moment. Each kilometre was a personal victory, reflecting the spirit of Trail Trekkers. In reflecting on this milestone, I am grateful to those who shared the trail, offered support, and made the experience unforgettable. Running teaches us that with determination and connection, challenges become opportunities to grow. This September, honour the spirit of Trail Trekkers — explore the unknown, connect with the journey, and embrace each step along the path. Thank you for joining this incredible journey. Until next time, keep trekking!
