There are moments in life when you pause and realise that you are exactly where you need to be.
Over the past few days, I’ve had one of those moments.
Retirement is often spoken about as an ending, but for me, it feels much more like a beginning. A few weeks ago, I made the decision to take on a teaching contract after retiring from full-time teaching. It has been one of the best decisions I could have made—not because it has led me back to the classroom, but because it has confirmed something important.
I still love teaching.
Helping others learn, grow and discover their potential remains a part of who I am. But equally, this experience has reinforced that there is so much more I want to do in this next chapter of life. There are trails still to walk, adventures to share, people to connect with and experiences yet to discover.
More than anything, it has shown me the importance of creating space.
Space to think.
Space to move.
Space to connect.
Space to simply be.
When life becomes busy, it can be easy to fill every available moment. Yet some of the most meaningful experiences happen when we intentionally slow down.
Over the last three days, I’ve been reminded of this in the simplest and most beautiful ways.
I body boarded with a wonderful group of women. There is something powerful about women gathering in nature—sharing laughter, encouragement and joy in the ocean. The waves have a way of washing away more than just sand; they clear the mind and refresh the spirit.
I spent time with my beautiful friend Suz over lunch and had the privilege of spending time with her lovely sisters. Friendships, especially those nurtured over time, are among life’s greatest gifts. Sharing stories, listening, laughing, playing cards and simply being together fills our cup in ways we often don’t realise until afterwards.
I ran 21 kilometres through the bush, a place that has always felt like home to me. Trails have a unique way of quietening the noise of everyday life. Out on the track, there is no rush. The rhythm of footsteps, the sounds of birds, and the stillness of the trees create a space for reflection that is difficult to find anywhere else.
The bush has always been my place to think, dream, process and simply breathe.
And to finish these special days, Bob and I shared a yin yoga class together. No words were needed—just quiet companionship and shared energy. Sometimes the simplest moments are the most meaningful.
As I look ahead, I feel incredibly grateful that Bob and I can shape our lives around the things we love. Through Trail Trekkers, we are fortunate to create experiences that allow others to slow down, connect with nature, challenge themselves and discover what truly matters.
Because perhaps that is what life is about.
Not filling every hour.
But creating space for the things that make us feel alive.
Exploring new places.
Connecting with people and nature.
Breathing deeply and appreciating the journey.
Life is short and there are still so many experiences waiting.
So, if there is one lesson these past few days have reminded me of, it is this:
Create space for what matters.
The trails will always be there.
The conversations matter.
The moments matter.
And sometimes, slowing down is exactly what allows us to move forward.
Explore. Connect. Breathe.
